Name: Shortjaw kokopu distribution

Display Field: nzsegment

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolyline

Description: The threatened species flora and fauna data is contained in 4 datasets:Biodiversity - Threatened Freshwater Dependent FloraBiodiversity - Threatened Freshwater Fauna - Critical Habitat (NoFish)Biodiversity - Threatened Lamprey - DistributionBiodiversity - Threatened Shortjaw Kokopu - Distribution. These datasets identify 16 critical freshwater habitats for 13 freshwater dependent threatened flora species, 18 critical freshwater habitats for four freshwater dependent threatened fauna species (excluding fish and freshwater invertebrates), and two threatened fish species in the Bay of Plenty. This data shows the potential distribution of shortjaw kokopuin the Bay of Plenty Region.Note: Please also see the “Indigenous fish freshwater habitats and pathways” layers (FishIndigenous_KnownHistoricLocations, FishIndigenous_KnownMigratoryPathway, FishIndigenous_ModelledDistribution, FishIndigenous_ModelledMigratoryPathway) and check their conservation status on nztcs.org.nz.Under the New Zealand Threat Classification System (Dunn et al. 2017) two indigenous fish species in the Bay of Plenty are classified as ‘Threatened – Nationally Vulnerable’: shortjaw kōkopu (Galaxias postvectis) and lamprey (Geotria australis). The potential distribution of both species in the Bay of Plenty is based on amalgamation of information from three sources: the New Zealand Freshwater Fish Database (NZFFDB), environmental DNA records, and predicted species distribution models. This information was compiled in March 2024, by BoPRC Environmental Scientist, E Fox. Please note that fish distributions are subject to change as our knowledge of species distributions grows over time.Multiple fish distribution models are available (Leathwick et al. 2008, Crow et al. 2014, White et al. 2022) to achieve a combined map, each model was filtered to areas of elevated predicted probability of capture/occurrence. The thresholds applied were specific to each species and model. For shortjaw kōkopu these thresholds were: Leathwick et al. 2008 ≥ 0.21Crow et al. 2014 ≥ 0.335White et al. 2022 ≥ 0.25For information about the lifecycle and habitat requirements of Shortjaw kōkopu and Lamprey, please see Habitat requirements of native freshwater fish in Aotearoa New Zealand (https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/freshwater-fish)Crow, S., Booker, D., Sykes J., Unwin, M.
