Layer: Wetlands (ID: 65)

Name: Wetlands

Display Field: SiteName

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: Last update: September 2025This is an amalgamated dataset of wetland surveys done at different times and by different organisations. Each survey has different attribute fields and where the attribute fields record the same information this may take different forms. This data layer has been created using aerial imagery, LiDAR elevation data, and existing wetland geospatial information. While it provides a useful indicator of where wetlands are likely to occur, on-the-ground verification is necessary to confirm wetland locations, define boundaries, and determine relevant rules under local plans and legislation. The dataset has taken the most common/useful attribute information from all the surveys but this means not all the wetland polygons will have information for all attribute fields. All polygons have a value for Original Layer and Original ID so the information can be tracked back to it originating survey.Process to amalgamate datasets:Since none of this data has been field checked (except that which came from the original WetlandExtents layer) the rule is the we hold the greatest possible wetland extent and that newer surveys 'replace' older surveys.Check the attribute table able match the fields to those already in the Wetland attribute table. If there are attributes in the new data that do not already have an equivalent in this dataset and the information in these fields is important create new fields in this dataset. If there is already an equivalent field don't create another one. If the data in an equivalent field is in a slightly different form but giving the same information keep the data in the form as it came in the survey. E.g. field WetlandExotic in some surveys holds words such as Exotic and Native and in other surveys holds a % exotic vegetation. Both go into the same field and stay in the same form - just at a % sign for the percentages so it is clear. Hoever if there is a fields like IsExotic which holds a 1 for exotic vegetation and a 0 for native change this to the words as it is confusing.Create a copy of the new survey with all the fields as in the Wetland SDE layer and match the fields so the right information goes into the right field.Create a copy of the Wetland SDE layer to work onFill in the WMA, FMU, and OriginalLayer fields.Make sure each wetland has an OriginalID if this is not already in the survey data. If not - create it in the original dataset so we can match it back in the futureFind any wetlands that match a wetland already in the data that has a WetlandID. This ID is the one that all polygons of the same wetland will have and links back to the original WetlandExtents layer although other wetlands may get a WetlandID and a SiteName over time. Fill in the WetlandID and SiteName, Locality etc. for these known wetlands.Clean the data to remove any overlaps and gapsErase the new data from the old data so you are left with holes in the old data that match the new data.Explode the erased data, select any polygons with an area <= 50m2 and delete these. Deissolve the erased data by all fields except ObjectID, Shape_Area and Shae_Length to merge all wetlands back togetherAppend the new data into the erased data. This will amalgamate the new survey into the original data without overlaps and keeping any extra areas/extra wetlands that were previously identified but may not have been in the new survey. This data has been published publicly (probably just the prod data) as a hosted feature service in AGOL so this will also need to be updated.Datasets used to create this layer:Tarawera WMA Wetland AreasMapping completed: 2024Survey done by: Pattle Delamore PartnersReport: TARAWERA WMA WETLAND MAPPING 2024.
