These polygons are mapped to typically follow surface water catchments. Primary surface water catchments have been divided into three groundwater zones for the Western Bay where a confined groundwater system occurs; therefore no hydraulic connection to surface waters. A mass water balance has been calculated for each groundwater zone. The remaining groundwater volume was then allocated based on Proposed National Environmental Standard on Ecological Flows and Water Levels (2008); no more than 35% of average annual recharge to the aquifer be allocated. The mass water balance for each groundwater zone has been calculated by GNS and reported in GNS Science Consultancy Report 2008/240 held in BOPRC library. This layer provides information with regard to groundwater availability and allocation based on water balance work undertaken by Paul White from GNS Science, 35% of NES and groundwater allocated under water permit (RMA). Please read the Fields descriptions for better understanding of how this layer was created. If you can not see the fields descriptions for this layer, you need to change the Metadata Options to FGDC CSDGM Metadata.
