ArchSite incorporates information from the New Zealand Archaeological Association’s (NZAA) Site Recording Scheme and Upgrade Project. The Site Recording Scheme began over fifty years ago as a paper based recording system for information about archaeological sites. Information has been provided by many different individuals and organisations over the years as their contribution to this collaborative approach to archaeological site recording.
For the purposes of ArchSite, an archaeological site is defined as any specific locality where there is or has been physical evidence for human occupation or activity in the past, that is or maybe able to be investigated by archaeological techniques.
Not all site positions in ArchSite may still contain physical evidence, such as artefact findspots, where the item has been removed once discovered. These sites however provide important indications of past human activity and are included in ArchSite. Sites may also have been destroyed, but the position is retained in ArchSite.
Note that there is no cut‐off date for sites that may be recorded in ArchSite, so it may include sites that do not meet the definition in the Historic Places Act 1993. For further information about archaeological sites and the Historic Places Act 1993 visit the New Zealand Historic Places Trust http://www.historic.org.nz/heritage/archsites_legal.html.
In cases where the position of the site is given as a grid reference obtained from CINZAS, thisdatasetprovides a 100 metre square plotted from thesouth west corner of the site to display the areawhere the site position is likely to lie. This datasetdoes not show the area/extent of the site.

",
