<statement>The dataset history and methods are described below, refer to the report for more detail.
Objectives of the Project.
To identify, map, and describe the vegetation of all known geothermal sites in the BOP Region, and assess changes since 2003.
To assess the relative significance of each site using EBOP RPS criteria in terms of national, regional, and local significance.
Methods of the Project involved in the Acquistion of Data.
The latest (2007) aerial imagery of the Region was compared with the previous (2003) imagery to detect differences in geothermal vegetation.
Fourty-one sites were visited and re-assessed in autumn 2010, paying particular attention to apparent changes 2003-2007.
Vegetation type polygons were corrected on the latest imagery.
The relative significance (National, Regional, or Local) of each site was assessed in terms of EBOP RPS criteria. Aerial imagery from 2007 and 2003 Regional Digital Aerial Mosaic (RDAM), and GIS shapefiles derived from the latter (Wildland Consultants 2005a) were compared to identify geothermal sites where change in the extent or condition had occurred. Field surveys were undertaken in April-June 2010 at almost all sites known to support geothermal vegetation in the Bay of Plenty Region to identify geothermal vegetation using, where possible, the hierarchical classification of geothermal vegetation types developed in previous mapping of geothermal vegetation in the Bay of Plenty for EBOP (Wildland Consultants 2005a). Geothermal sites were mapped over 2007 aerial photographs and their vegetation described, based on imagery and field verification (Appendix 1). Where they were an integral part of the site, adjacent non-geothermal vegetation types were also described. The hydrosystem (i.e., terrestrial or geothermal wetland) of each habitat was recorded. Special features of the flora and fauna present, threats to integrity and continued viability, modifications, and current condition were recorded and management requirements identified. Results were assessed to identify changes in the extent and condition of geothermal vegetation since 2005. Earlier mapping errors leading to apparent changes in extent/condition were identified. A copy of the field form is appended (Appendix 3); common names and scientific equivalents are listed in Appendix 4. For sites not visited on the current survey, information is drawn almost entirely from Wildland Consultants (2005b).
The ecological significance of each site was assessed against the Bay of Plenty Regional Policy Statement (RPS) - Heritage Criteria: Appendix F, Set 3 and Guidelines (Appendix 5). Relative ecological significance was assessed at national, regional, and local scales, and justification provided for each ranking, using Criteria from Environment Waikato for Assessment of Relative Significance (Appendix 6). The reasons for altered polygons are given under Extent of Change, due either to 'Real' changes or 'Mapping' changes. Real changes may be either changes in vegetation type or area, or both, in which case the type change takes priority, i.e., there was usually also a degree of area change but more importantly, the type changed. 'Area change' is defined as being changes >1m2.
Mapping changes may be either changes in vegetation type or area, or both, in which case the type change takes priority. This report includes an index of geothermal sites, whether visited or not, and the appendices include information on other geothermal sites in the Region where no vascular vegetation is known to occur (Appendix 2), descriptions of geothermal habitats (Appendix 7), notes on the vascular flora of geothermal areas (Appendix 8), descriptions of vegetation classes (Appendix 9), and a glossary of technical terms (Appendix 10). An Excel spreadsheet containing the vegetation information was prepared for migration into the EBOP Geothermal database. Final shapefiles and accompanying metadata, the final report (in hard and electronic copies), and the Excel spreadsheet were provided to Environment Bay of Plenty.
Results.
The vegetation types of 93 polygons (19% of the total) across all sites were altered as a result of the current survey. The vast majority of changes are due to previous inaccuracies rather than real changes in vegetation since it was last assessed.
Better aerial photography has enabled more precise mapping of vegetation types, which accounts for nearly half of the changes in vegetation mapping. More than half of the changes in vegetation mapping were due to revisions in vegetation classification made during field inspection. Another substantial reason for altered typing is the presence of prostrate kanuka in many polygons where it was previously described as 'normal' kanuka.
A further reason for the changes is replacement of the structural class 'shrubland' (shrub cover <80 %) by 'scrub' (shrub cover >80 %).
33 sites were ranked as of National, 6 sites of Regional, and 2 sites of Local significance in terms of EBOP RPS criteria. Four sites with no native geothermal vegetation remaining did not meet any ranking criteria.
Two overall trends are apparent: a general increase in the level of weed infestation and an increase in weed control.</statement>
